At Home — Kitchen and Dining Design Inspiration
Over the past year and a half, it’s become pretty standard for the lines between home and work to become blurred for most of us. But that’s been my reality for years now, and the truth is, I kind of love it — most of the time.
The nature of what I do means that very few days are the same for me. Though I do tend to spend a lot of time on my computer, there’s generally at least a day or two every week where I’m shooting lifestyle or product content for a brand, prepping backdrops or props for a photoshoot, or building out tactile moodboards or visual strategies with printed collateral and various other pieces.
So though I do have a dedicated office/studio, you’ll often find me moving around the house chasing the best late afternoon light, styling up shelves in the dining room or turning the counter top into a vignette.
Which is why I see pretty much every space in our house as a live/work space, and have been dreaming and scheming about how to take it to the next level — both functionally and aesthetically — since we moved in a little over two years ago.
And now, we’re about to get started on the kitchen and dining space, so before I show you the plan and design decisions I’ve made, I wanted to share some of my inspiration, which is less of a literal interpretation of what we’re after, and more of the vibe and feeling overall.
In a lot of ways, I’ve been approaching my design decisions for this space, which is open concept, in much the same way as I go about designing a brand or a photoshoot, focusing first on how we want it to function, sure, but also how we want the experience to feel and how we can tell these stories through intentional decisions. This has been over a year in progress, so I’ve had a lot of time to pull inspiration and moodboard to my heart’s content, but ultimately, this is where we’ve ended up and what I’m drawn towards for this specific project. Lots of texture, vintage inspirations with a nod to modern silhouettes and a tonal, warm palette.
