Back to Basics // Outfit Inspiration

fa682c16bc8f91fb8c216ee6d6d6e2af There's been a lot of talk on the blog recently about shopping your own closet to come up with creative outfit ideas rather than always relying on new items in your wardrobe, and as I've found myself turning back to basics to do just that, I've also been pulling lots of styling and outfit inspiration.

When it comes down to it, I think it's important to think outside the box a little bit when it comes to styling, allowing yourself to see possibilities beyond what you would normally, and come up with ways to wear pieces in brand new ways. I know for me, I tend to have my go-to outfits in my own closet, pieces I know go together already, right down to the accessories and all the details. But when you only stick to these tried-and-true combinations and don't venture outside of your comfort zone, you're missing out on so many styling opportunities, and that's when you start to feel like you have nothing to wear, even though you have a closet full of clothes in front of you.

So here's what I suggest: set aside some time to go through your closet and play dress up. Make sure you're not in a rush and don't have a time limit on it, and just have a little fun planning outfits and trying new pairings.

Accessories are key when you're redefining your basics. A chambray shirt and black skinnies - two items most of us probably already have in our closet - are elevated by the simple of addition of arm cuffs and classic pumps, creating a put-together outfit that's a little bit different than what you would expect.

Play with proportions. I love the pairing of the billowy, almost-boho top with the printed shorts worn here for a new take on a chic black-and-white ensemble that is anything but boring.

Pay attention to what's underneath. Sheer items offer so many amazing layering opportunities, allowing you to take it to the next level with the perfect bra or a lacy slip underneath.

Don't be afraid to mix styles. Though my guess is that the sheer polka dot underneath is a little bit more on the "uptown" side, style-wise, by pairing it with denim shortfalls the effect is much more downtown, and it definitely has an unexpected and undeniably cool feel.

When in doubt, add a hat. In the same way that I believe lipstick is the perfect way to finish off a look, I think hats are one accessory that an instantly change an outfit and add the finishing touch, pulling it all together. And with so many options out there, they're an ideal way to breathe new life into a basic piece you already own.
