Take Me Out // Jelly Modern Doughnuts
Summer is in full swing, and I’ve been keeping very busy racing around the city working on fun new projects and photoshoots, and planning top secret celebrations (don’t worry, you’ll get invited soon!) In between all of the mayhem and sparkles though, a girl’s gotta eat, and so I’ve been grabbing handfuls of this or that every chance I get. My favourite snack lately is sweet, sticky, and easy to eat on the run (though I often end up with sprinkles all over me, but I’m not complaining.) You guessed it: I’m donut crazy!
It’s rumoured that Canada is considered to have the best donuts in the world, and I wouldn’t dispute it! Here in Toronto alone we have a ton of incredible artisan donut shops, and some even offer vegan and gluten free options too. There’s truly something for everyone, and over the past few years I’ve made a point of trying to visit every new donut shop in the city to try out their tasty deep fried treats. One spot I hadn’t yet had a chance to visit though is the famous Jelly Modern Doughnuts.
A tiny sparkling white and pink donut shop located just outside of Kensington Market, this little bakery is a bit of a Canadian Legend. Their donuts are sold in various gourmet stores around the country, they have shops in Toronto and Calgary, and they’ve received praise from The Food Network, Martha Stewart, and Oprah! Regarding the donuts themselves, they come in mini and full size in case you’re not craving a massive sugar overdose, and their as adorable as they are inventive and delicious. Gourmet flavours like Creme Brûlée and s’mores are available year-round, and seasonal favourites and weekend specials are constantly being revealed.
I dropped into this tiny pink spot on a Tuesday morning before I started my work day, determined to get a little bit of indulgence in. After careful consideration, I chose the cherry cobbler donut (if it has fruit it’s breakfast, right?), picked a bright spot in the window to enjoy my treat, and took a bite. My donut was absolutely divine, the perfect combination of sweet and fruity, and I loved flipping through Jelly's donut photo books while I nibbled.
Because I adore matching, I dressed up in a hot pink dress by Charlie Jade . A delicate silk number with zipper details that unzip to reveal a slightly lighter pink inner layer, this dress is perfect for summer nights out on the town, or sunny summer daytime looks. I paired it with some slinky black heels, a purse by Hoi Bo (a fantastic local brand), and a gold glitter Ban.do hair clip, because every outfit needs a bit of sparkle! I felt dressy, fun, and totally inspired to start my day, especially with the sugar rush I experienced shortly after walking out the door!
‘Take Me Out’ is a new blog series collaboration between Toronto blogger Alyssa, of Random Acts of Pastel and Bicyclette, where she takes her favourite Bicyclette pieces on adventures throughout the city, and brings you along!
