One of the upsides to cooler weather around this time of year is that we can add layers, texture, and visual interest back into our wardrobes which can prove to be a little more difficult in warmer months. Playing around with mixing prints, textures, and patterns is a great way to add interest to any outfit, although I'll be the first to admit it can be daunting to know where to begin. The good news is it turns out there is a bit of a science behind the art of pattern mixing and by following these simple tips you should be on your way to experimenting and spicing up your wardrobe in no time at all.

// Colour One simple rule to remember is often you want to match by colour, not pattern. All you need to do is to ensure there is at least one colour that matches between the pieces. While the patterns themselves may be completely opposite, the colour can tie the patterns together so that it makes sense visually. If you want to start simple, try mixing black and white patterns as they go with virtually everything (Quick tip: black and white stripes with a polka dot print is a classic combo).

// Size The size of the two prints should not be the same otherwise the outfit can look too loud or busy, almost as if the prints are competing with one another. Try this easy rule of mixing a large pattern with a smaller pattern so that they work together, not against each other.

// Stripes Stripes are a great place to start as they are extremely versatile and can easily work with so many different prints. Try pairing stripes with leopard, plaid, or a floral print. This is a great way of looking bold and stylish, but still classic.

// Basics Basics can be your foundation for laying out prints. Try using basics or accessories in the same colour palette as the prints to tie the look together. Basic pieces in solid colours such as the perfect grey tee or black skinny jeans can also help to break up the pattern and avoid looking too busy.

// Pattern Two of the same patterns look great together if you play around with the size, texture and colour of the prints. Try the latest trend of mixing plaid on plaid together for the perfect fall look.

// Experiment Lastly, the most important rule of all is - there are no rules. The whole idea is breaking the rules of what people think would look good together so don't forget to play around and see what works for you. Throw the rulebook out the window and leave the house with confidence. Don't be afraid to experiment with mixing prints and remember, have fun with it!
