Winter Style Inspiration
Just to state the obvious, it's really cold outside, and because we're finding it hard to leave our homes in the first place, let alone put together an outfit that still showcases our sartorial creativity, we figured it was time to compile a little winter style inspiration.
We're feeling the full effects of winter right now, and though we're definitely not complaining (we're quite aware of the fact that we live in Canada, it's January, and this is pretty much to be expected...), it does require a little extra creativity when getting dressed in the morning. And layers. Layers are key, as well as fun hats and scarves and any accessory that serves a functional purpose and also lets you showcase your personal style once you're bundled.
We pulled a few images that are serving as our inspiration right now, encouraging us to step into our closets, search for those perfect end-of-season sale items, and take our outfits to the next level.
1 // There's something about the timeless mix of distressed denim and stripes that we'll never tire of, and it's a classic pairing that isn't too "done" with the worn-in jeans. Other favourite additions? A sparkly pair of earrings or a statement necklace, or a touch of leopard print in the accessories.
2 // Print mixing is a great way to switch things up with pieces you already have and have some fun with your outfit. Polka dots and stripes (especially in a neutral colour palette like black and white) are great "basic" prints to balance out something a little crazier, like a floral. But trust us - this is where you want to play around and try out combinations you never thought would work together. Pay attention to the scale of prints, coordinating colours and the proportions and silhouettes of the garments themselves. We love the bright print of Finders Keepers Wildfire Skirt paired with a cropped polka dot sweater, or tapestry printed jacket like this Ladakh style layered over a printed tee.
3 // The above look showcases two of our favourite things: a classic black and white outfit, and lace. Easy to style, by sticking to a look like this, it's effortlessly chic and you can experiment more with various textures and styles. Lace always has a feminine vibe, which we love, and it's the perfect way to create a lighter effect while still playing around with layers. For little lace dresses that can be dressed up or down, try the Keepsake Reunion Dress, Darling Ivory Lace Dress, or the Alexa Dress. We've recently fallen back in love with midi-length skirts like the one above, and the Free People Pretty Pleats skirt would be a great transitional piece to wear all year round.
4 // We'd be lying if we said that we don't reach for sweaters more than any other item when it's this cold out, and I don't think we need to explain why. Cozy, comfortable and with endless styling possibilities, they keep us warm when it matters the most and we love the simplicity and ease of throwing on our favourite style. Free People always has amazing options, and the embellishment on the Winter Sparkle Pullover offers a little something extra. For oversized and perfectly slouchy, look no further than the Ganni Union Jack Knit.
We love how chic the second look is with the all-black ensemble and choice of key accessories. We have a couple of the Brave Carmella belts left in-store (seen styled here) that would be perfect for this.
5 // In terms of outerwear, sometimes our options can be limited because - let's face it - function is key here, and we don't want to have to sacrifice warmth on those beyond cold days. We love the idea of adding in bright colours whenever possible, whether it's the jacket itself (like the Darling Cobalt Coat or Jade Fur Trimmed Coat for the not-quite-as-cold days), or a brightly striped toque (this hot pink Plush style is perfect). We're also big fans of a bright lip when the temperatures drop, adding a little colour and that instant glam factor.
We're also swooning a little over this bow in her hair here. An easy addition but it completely finished off the look. Pick up a piece of ribbon or try the Ban.do Girlie Bow for a bolder style.
